General Meeting for March Trip

February 18th, 2012

Hello Achievers,

Reminder our General Meeting is this Wednesday, Feb 22nd @ 7pm, REI store in Tustin.  I have attached the trip form, please fill this out and bring it to the meeting.  If you need to carpool up to Mammoth, please try to attend the meeting to coordinate with other members.  Also suggest you post on our Facebook Group page if you have space in your vehicle, or if you ‘re looking for a ride.

Also, the Ski A Thon slalom course will be held on the March 30th to April 1st trip; this gives you almost a month and half to get pledges.  We encourage all members, especially the students, to help support our club.  The bi-skis we currently have are getting near retirement, so we need to raise additional funds to purchase new ones, I’m hoping we get the new bi-ski by HOC.  The more pledges we get, the better chance we’ll have enough funds to purchase it.  At minimum, every member should be able to generate $100 in donations, 10 people @ $10 each.  I’m also attaching the Ski A Thon package and pledge sheet again, let’s get out there and give back to this great organization.  Any additional questions, please contact John Lucas at foodie92656@gmail.com; or 949-212-1677.

Mammoth got 2 foot of fresh snow last week, SNOW BABY SNOW !!!

Ski A Thon – Fundraising

February 13th, 2012

Message From John Lucas, Fundraising Chair

Our Ski-a-Thon is an annual event we host in the spring. We encourage students to obtain pledges from everywhere possible… family & friends, classmates & teachers, or coworkers & employers. This is a great opportunity for the students to give back to the group and have a lot of fun doing it. It will be a full weekend, with our regular instruction sessions on Saturday, and come Saturday night, a special potluck complete with a ‘Crazy Hat’ contest. This is a fierce competition where you can all quite possibly win…exclusive bragging rights!
On Sunday morning things really heat up, We’ll have a race course set up, just like in the Olympics. Everyone is invited to participate in contests such as best time for a student, best time for an instructor or, most importantly….the most runs. Give it a try!  You might get a plaque at the awards ceremony in June!!

IDEAS FOR OBTAINING PLEDGES

• Pledge yourself first!! It is easier to get others to sponsor the event if they see your commitment.

• A little goes a long way! It only takes 10 people pledging $10 each to earn $100!

• Pledges can be made on a per run or a fixed basis. Fixed pledges, collected in advance, are the best because you don’t have to make a second trip or call to your sponsor – except to say “Thank-You!! We hit our goal thanks to you!”

• Who to ask? Everyone! Ask friends, family, other skiers, coworkers, companies, your boss, neighbors, and so on.

• Many companies have matching programs for charity fund-raisers, or simply have a budget allocated to donate to charity. Does your company have something like this, or do you know someone who does? Ask around – you may be surprised!

• Get your pledge sheets filled out. I’ll be collecting sheets and pledges on Saturday March 31st. We will make more if you need them. Good luck and happy pledging!

Please call or email with any questions.

Great February Trip !!

February 8th, 2012

Message From the President.

Once again, The Achiever’s set out for Mammoth, and once again, we had another great trip, that was, as they say “Off the Hook!” A total of eight students and 20+ Instructors descended upon Mammoth for our February trip and a good time was had by all. We enjoyed picture perfect weather, awesome snow conditions and thanks to the diligence and commitment of our instructors, everyone made it through the week-end safely.

Congratulations to first time student Racquel Dicepeda, who made her first trip with us. Raquel is blind and was referred to us by Gordon Chan. I must confess that I am nothing short of impressed by anyone with a visual impairment who attempts skiing. I have flirted with skiing blind in clinics, and it scares me to death. She did a great job skiing with Lisa Martin, Craig Kirkpatrick and Maxine Sweeney who I am proud to say, did a fantastic job as her instructors. She told me on the ride home that she had a great time skiing with us, and that she will definitely will be back for more on future trips.

Students Brent Olson, Nathan Zelaya and Alex Lee made great made great progressions in their skiing, while the “Three Amigos” Phong, Le, Darryl Coit and Nahu G ran their instructors through their paces on mono-skis.

Rookie instructors Eileen Murphy, Elyse Munroe and Bobby “The Kid” Carroll did a great job working with students both on and off the mountain. They are outstanding individuals who bring a great positive energy to our group. I look forward to all of them making significant contributions in the future and can’t wait to watch them develop as ski instructors.

Once again, we gathered at Grace Community Church for another awesome pot-luck. Special thanks to Bernhard and Patti Froemel for taking care of the necessary arrangements and for doing an outstanding job of representing us to the good people of the church. In the past, we met at the Mammoth Community Center. When another local church took over that facility for their Saturday evening service, we were left without a venue. Patti googled “Meeting places in Mammoth”, and Grace Community was the first thing to come up. We called them on a Tuesday prior to the next trip, and they allowed us to use their church the following Saturday, never asking for anything prior in terms of finance, proof of insurance, etc. We have maintained a great relationship with them ever since and are grateful for their trust, kindness and generosity in letting us use their beautiful facility.

The March trip will be upon us soon. This will be the last trip prior to Ski-a-Thon, our major fundraising effort of the season, which will be held during the April trip. Once again I will state my goal of having 20 students make a trip. As I said at the pot-luck of our last trip, we have all of the resources that we need to make it happen. All we need is the students.

Our next General Meeting will be Wednesday, February 22 at the REI store in Tustin. Stay tuned for a special guest who may speak at that meeting.

Those that have the new Mammoth electronic ticket card, please email Brent Kusuhara (brentkus@mac.com) the red numbers behind the card. Please do this ASAP to avoid any issue re-loading it for the next trip.

Once again I must say that I am humbled to be the President of a group of such dedicated, caring and talented people. Thank you for all that you do for this grand and noble enterprise.
