11-28-09 Mammoth Dump Alert!

November 28th, 2009

Just in time for our first student trip of the season! Mammoth just sent out a dump alert, they have received over a foot of fresh snow already and it is expected to keep snowing throughout the day. According to the website they are running the lower lifts including Discovery, this is a good sign for us.

What did you do on your Summer Vacation?

November 28th, 2009

John Ledbetter sent over these pictures of himself & Gordon Chan from a fishing trip they had over the summer. Now you know what they look like without being all bundled up in ski gear.

Fundraising at

November 24th, 2009

     Our fundraising has been a little light in the past few years so now is the time to pick up the pace. Here is a small, easy way to help the group that can add up quickly & consistently. We have had an association with for a few years now & I was just checking out some of their updates. Here is how it works in a nutshell;

The iGive website works in simple fashion. You can go to the site, sign up with DSUSA-OC as your charity of choice…then start shopping. The partnering online stores actually kickback a percentage of the sales as long as you go through the iGive site. Even if you are simply ‘window shopping’ as long as you are using the Yahoo powered search through the iGive site they give us a penny for every search (please don’t sit there and click away….they have that figured out).

There are over 700 online stores partnered with iGive, some big players like Best Buy,, DELL, & Staples. They have what they call double days where online retailers will double up on their donations, some of these really add up, like FTD was kicking back 8.4%, online photo sites like Snapfish were offering 25% off holiday photo cards and are kicking back 6.4% to us. Some of these are offering double their percentage coming up on the holidays. As long as you go through the site we get the benefit, so check it out, every little bit helps.

This is a direct link to associate your online shoping with our group.

I heard about this organization yesterday from a friend who had just received their first treasurebox. This group packages food from major producers across the country…& quite the variety I might add. The food comes frozen & you pick it up from a location close to where you live. Check out how simple this is, you order a treasurebox online for $30 and you pick up 21-25 pounds ($65-100 retail) of frozen food at a location of your choosing, on a predetermined date.

Check out the website for a sampling of what you receive. There are no restrictions or qualifications to be met when ordering. I ordered 2 yesterday.

Background Screening Program

November 23rd, 2009

Disabled Sports USA Orange County Chapter (DSUSA OC) is proud to announce a working partnership with National Center for Safety Initiatives through which we will engage in a comprehensive background screening program for our instructors and volunteers. This is a required step in the DSUSA-OC membership process starting January 1, 2009. This process can take up to 10 days to complete so be sure to do this well in advance of a planned trip.

DSUSA OC has taken important steps to ensure the highest level of safety within our programs – for all participants and also for you, who make the programs a success. One of these steps is the implementation of a standardized approach to background screening for our instructors and volunteers through the National Center for Safety Initiatives. This includes a comprehensive background screening using the Center’s Check it Twice™ product and a simple “Red Light/Green Light” clearance report issued in accordance with the Recommended Guidelines® published by the National Council of Youth Sports. This is part of a national movement towards the standardization of safety programs for youth-serving organizations in this country.

Disabled Sports USA Orange County Chapter has worked with National Center for Safety Initiatives to ensure that this process is convenient, secure and confidential.

Simply go to and click on “Background Check Self Registration” on the left side of the webpage. Complete three easy steps:

Step 1:            Enter Self Registration Number: 29771900

Step 2:            Enter Your Information as Requested

Step 3:            Provide Legal Authorization and Certification

“Red Light/Green Light” Results will be sent to Disabled Sports USA Orange County Chapter National Center for Safety Initiatives will contact you directly if there are any questions, problems or issues related to your specific information.

It is important when entering your name, you use your full legal name as written on your birth certificate or driver’s license. Please also verify that your social security number was typed correctly. Using nicknames or failing to type a correct social security number may delay or invalidate your background check.

If you have any questions or problems submitting your information, please call the National Center for Safety Initiatives at (866) 833-7100 x109.

Thank you for your continued participation and your cooperation in this important process. We are excited to offer world-class programs, working with world-class people!

2009 Instructor Trip is Canceled

November 16th, 2009

We did have some interest in the upcoming Instructor Trip, but alas we are going to have to cancel the event. Due to the limited terrain that is open, we thought it best to postpone our instructor training. We will work our Instructor clinics into the next few trips.

The next trip on the weekend of December 11th-13th will be our first student trip of the season. The general meeting to be held prior to this trip will be held on November the 25th at 7PM.

Think Snow!

November 4th General Meeting Canceled

November 2nd, 2009

Our Instructor trip is coming up on the weekend of Nov 20-22, this trip is 3 days of Instructor clinics in preparation for the season ahead. The trip hinges on the conditions at Mammoth, they opened for a few days in the middle of October & then had to close after a heat spell. The temp has dropped again, & they are back to making snow. The rumor is that they expect to open back up this Saturday Nov the 7th, possibly top to bottom at the main lodge.

We are going to have to cancel our scheduled general meeting this Wednesday the 4th because the Children’s League in Fullerton is not available. The trip is still on unless we hear different from Mammoth. We ask that you to contact Mike Watts if you are planning on making the trip. The trip form is attached with Mike’s address on it…also make sure you have your membership forms completed and into Karen, her address in on the membership form.

If anybody knows of a place to hold our general meetings we are open to suggestions. These meetings are not typically very large and they don’t run late. We just need a place, preferably in Central OC, for potential new members to come & meet with us before we all head for the hill. If you have any ideas please contact Mac at
