Kickoff Picnic

October 24th, 2009

We had a great picnic to start the season off right! The weather was great as you can see from these pictures that Karen sent over. We had some new members as well as some members coming back that we haven’t seen in a few years.

Mammoth Opens for 2009-10 Season!

October 19th, 2009

Mammoth Opened last Friday October 16, 2009 for their 2nd earliest opening ever! For those eager enough to get those first tracks in with Wooly, they were also greeted with a warm spell. It was warm enough that Mammoth decided to close today. I received an email this morning, they are going to wait for a little more snow and then open up again…so Think Snow!

Here is a shot I pulled off the Mammoth Mountain Website

DSUSA-OC Dryland Clinic & Kickoff Picnic

October 15th, 2009

Good Morning Achievers,

            The snow is falling ….and Mammoth is opening tomorrow! So the topic of discussion at last nights general meeting was whether it was better to leave at 2 or 3 in the morning in order to make it there for hot chocolate & first tracks with Wooly.

For those of us who aren’t ready to start the season just yet & would like a little warmup we are having the Dryland Clinic and the Picnic on Saturday October the 24th.

Dryland Clinic

            The Dryland is going to be in Newport Beach in the Fashion Island complex. It will start at 8:30 with a breakfast hosted by us & then move into the class at 9:00 which will cover;

· Introduction to Adaptive Snowsports (for new recruits; review/participation for returning)

· Movement Analysis

· Teaching Tips

The location is;

START Physical Therapy

360 San Miguel Ave,  Suite 301

Newport Beach,  CA    92660

It is OK to park anywhere it says “Patient parking” in the lot or parking structure. From elevators, turn right down the hallway, right at the next hallway. Suite 301 is the last door on the left.

Please RSVP to Karey or if you have any questions at for the Dryland.

Kickoff Picnic

            This year the picnic location has changed, it is going to be held in Irvine, not far from the dryland clinic. If you know any potential students or instructors who might be interested in joining us, bring them along. This is a great time to introduce them to the group. We will have all the necessary membership paperwork for students & instructors. It will run from 12-4 & we will of course provide the hotdogs, hamburgers & soft drinks, if you would like to bring a side dish we would appreciate it.

A-L   –  Side Dish

M-Z  –  Dessert

The picnic will be in the vicinity of the 405 & Culver Dr. at;

3754 Hamilton Ave.

Irvine, CA

The easiest way to get there from the dryland clinic is to go north on Macarthur & make a right on Bonita Canyon Rd., this turns into Culver. Make the first left after the 405 onto Ferris, then make a left at the end on Wayne, make a right on Huron. At the end you can go either way to a cul-de-sac next to the park.

It looks like you can park on the street & the picnic will be behind the clubhouse. Please RSVP by replying to this email or you can contact Gary at if you have any questions.

2009 DSUSA-OC Angels Game

October 14th, 2009

Karen Lunzman sent over these great pictures from the Angels Game. The Angels may not have won but everyone had a good time. I heard from a number of people that a lot of past members came out of the woodwork for this event.

Letter From the President

October 14th, 2009

Hello my fellow “Achievers”

I trust all have had a fabulous summer and are completing their conditioning programs for the coming season.  Not so much?  Better get on it if you want to keep up with Mark and El Presidente on the upper slopes.

Our annual awards banquet was held June 6th at the Taleo Grill in Irvine.  If you missed it you missed a great meal and a fun time.  Congratulations to the following award winners:  Mike Watts (Member of the year), Greg White (Instructor of the year, Most ski a thon pledges obtained, Fastest instructor ski a thon run, Worst dog injury of the year, Late to lunch award, Most awards award), Nahu G. (Student of the year), Christine Ton & Kaitlyn Ton (Rookie intructors of the year), Jennifer Frame (Rookie student of the year), Isaiah Thompson (Dr. Bob most inspirational award, fastest student ski a thon run assisted), Phong Le (Most ski a thon money raised), Al Walker (Most ski a thon runs), Scott McCall (Most ski a thon runs, fastest student ski a thon run unassisted).  Everyone in our group is an award winner in my book.  Thanks to all for your time, effort and passion towards making this past year a great success.

A brief note on some issues from this years’ summit meeting where policy, calendar and budget issues are adopted:  1) due to lackluster fund raising year, (blame the economy and a poor student effort), we will no longer be able to fund lodging for returning students.  Returning students will be required to pay for their lodging on each trip.  If funding should improve in the future, we would reconsider paying for lodging for returning students.  We will still pay for a new student and one guardian on their first trip only.  2) instructors will no longer be awarded free lodging on the sixth trip.  We are always interested in new or alternative lodging options.  If you have any info or connections, please contact any board member.  We are also seeking new board members.  Our current board consists of mostly long standing members who would gladly yield to “new blood.”  The time commitment is not that great and the group benefits everyone.  If you have not previously served, or previously served and just miss the action, step up and take your turn.  Call me with any questions.

That’s all for now.  Is this a great group or what?
