Dryland Clinic

Hello Achievers!

Our first training event of the season is fast approaching. The Dryland Clinic will be held on Saturday, October 20 at Select Physical Therapy, 360 San Miguel Drive, # 301, Newport Beach 92660. PLEASE RSVP as soon as possible to dsoc.trips@gmail.com or through our Facebook event page.

This is a great opportunity for new instructors to learn about the group, how we operate, the individual disabled populations that we serve and to meet veteran instructors. This event will also be counted for mandatory training credit.

The day will start with continental breakfast / registration at 8:30 with the actual clinic running from 9 am – 12 pm. Come join us for a fun filled and informative day.

Kickoff Picnic

Hello Achievers!
Is everyone having an awesome summer?
Our 2018/2019 Kick-Off picnic and BBQ will be on September 8th. Back by popular demand, we will also do a joint BBQ with Ramp It Up.
Our two groups have collaborated in the past and it is a great way for our members to be exposed to the great sport of both handcycling and skiing. This is open to all members and their friends and family. Please share this email to anyone interested in getting involved with us, or Ramp It Up.
As usual, Ramp will have a number handcycles to use if you don’t have one. Volunteers can also try if extras are available.
Why do we have a kickoff picnic you asked?
  1. Time to think SNOW – do your snow dance early so we have plenty of fresh powder when Mammoth opens
  2. Turn in membership forms, we’ll have the forms available to sign, be sure to bring cash or check
  3. Go handcycling wiith fellow members
  4. Meet new volunteers and students
  5. and of course eat and drink
We will need your RSVP by September 3rd so we’re able to plan how much food will be needed. Please RSVP through our Facebook page, or via email dsoc.trips@gmail.com. We will provide burgers, hot dogs, chips and water. If you would like to bring a side or dessert to share, we would really appreciate!!! If you’re vegetarian, please let us know and we can also purchase veggie burgers.
Location – Bolsa Chica State Beach – near the North end (corner of PCH and Warner Avenue)
Date: September 8th
Time: 10-1pm
We’ll meet in Bolsa Chica state beach on the far side near the corner of Warner Avenue and PCH. Tom and his group will be there as early as 10am for those wanting to handcycle, and a hearty BBQ lunch will be provided for all in attendance near noon. The exact meeting location is the closest picnic area/restrooms near the corner of Warner and PCH. This area is wheelchair accessible.
If you want to park inside the beach, parking fee is $15 or $7.50 if you have a California Disabled State Pass – http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=27241.

February Trip Important Dates

Hello Achievers,

The February trip is on February 2-4. For those planning to attend, please keep the two below dates in mind.

If you’re needing accommodations through Viewpoint, Racquel will need your request by this Wednesday, January 17th.

If you do not need accommodation, be sure to send in your trip request by Wednesday, January 24th.

Pat’s clubhouse is getting renovated with ADA friendly ramps, etc. We’ll have to thank Pat as he has been pushing them to make the change Thank you Pat !!! Since the clubhouse is not available, we will NOT have a general meeting for the February trip; however, if you are a student that needs a medical evaluation, please let us know and we can coordinate to do it at Pat’s house.

General Meeting for January Trip

December 23rd, 2017
Hello Achievers,
Our next general meeting will be this Wednesday, December 27th. Please plan on attending if you have plans to attend the January 6-7 trip.
For those students that haven’t been evaluated by our medical staff, you’ll need to be evaluated and be cleared prior to signing up for a trip. Also a great time for ALL members to turn in their membership paperwork, liability waiver and annual dues. You can download all needed forms from our website, go to the top link, “How to Join“.
Racquel, our trip chair, also wanted to share the below message in regards to accommodation for January.
Dear Achievers Members,
How are you all doing? Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you all and your families!
I know you are busy preparing for the coming holidays, so planning for the January trip is most likely far away from your minds. We need you to send in your trip forms as soon as possible though if you are planning to go on the January trip. This is especially for those who need lodging arrangements at Viewpoint. The January trip is on January 6 to 7, and I always need to know that you need lodging accommodations at least three or two weeks before each trip.
Please send in your form via email, pasted on the body of the message and let me know how you are sending your payment. I accept payments via PayPal or Venmo if that will be more convenient for you. If you use other apps for sending payments, let me know and I will see how accessible that will be for you and me. If you are sending me a check, please advise me via email or text so I can look out for it in the mail.
Thank you so much. I look forward to seeing you all on the slopes!

What happens at a General Meeting:
  • Turn in membership, waiver, and other necessary forms, and annual dues.
  • For new instructors, you’ll need to do a background check, see below for instructions. For returning instructors, you’ll need to complete every other year. If you don’t recall whether you need to do it for this year, please contact Karen at teamlunz@gmail.com
  • Student medical evaluation
  • All forms can be downloaded on our webpage under the header How To Join
  • If you can’t make the meeting,please send membership, annual dues, and waiver to Karen Lunzman, her info and address is listed on the membership form. All trip request forms need to be turned into Racquel, her info is on the Trip Form.

Dryland Clinic

Hello  Achievers,
Our season opening training event is just around the corner. Our annual Dryland Clinic will be held in Irvine on Saturday October 21 from 8:30 to 1 pm.
3754 Hamilton Street, Irvine CA
This is our first training event of the season and is a great way for newcomers to get an idea of what we do. Topics will include an introduction to the disabilities of the students that we serve, information about becoming a certified instructor, student’s / parent’s perspective, a preview of our on the hill training in November and much much more. Will include continental breakfast.  Please RSVP via info@theachievers.org. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting potential new instructors.

Picnic @ The Beach

Hello Achievers.

What a great day at the beach today, and an awesome way to kick off our coming season. Met a lot of great people, and potential volunteers and students. Big thanks for Tom @ Ramp It Up for including our group in his BBQ today.

I heard he got up REALLY REALLY early to save our meeting spot – You’re awesome Tom!!!

I posted some pictures on our Instagram page, if you took some, please consider uploading. I got busy riding, talking an eating, so I didn’t get a chance to take many.

Many thanks for those that came out, next big event is the Dryland Clinic, I’ll send out a blast in a week on date, time and location.

March Trip

Hello Achievers,

Everyone ready for our March trip???  Let’s see, Mammoth just got a dump of new snow, 38-42″, and the season total is now 510 feet ( just kidding inches).  Some of you saw my error when I listed feet instead of inches on the last trip communication, confirms only a few of you are reading it.  :)

Sorry for the late notice, but if you’re planning to attend the March trip (10-12th), please send your trip request in by this coming Sunday, February 26th.  We weren’t able to secure Pat’s clubhouse to hold a general meeting so if you’re needing to be evaluated, please contact Gary K ASAP.

General Meeting for December Trip

Reminder this coming Wednesday is our General Meeting for those planning to attend the December trip on December 9-11th.

If you’re not able to make the meeting, be sure to send in your membership, and waiver as soon as possible, PO box listed on the membership form.  Also, I’m attaching our new Trip Form which allows you to fill out electronically so our Trip Coordinator, Racquel, is able to review, and coordinate.  Regardless if you need accommodation, this form needs to be filled out for all trips.  Please send your request to dsoc.trips@gmail.com no later than Friday, December 2nd.

This past Saturday we had a work party in Costa Mesa to clean out and rearrange the trailer. We met at Phil’s Ski & Snowboard Shop at 2980 McClintock Way, Costa Mesa, CA 92626 (714-754-7762), and then drove to their repair and tune up shop a block away. Phil has been so gracious to our group and once again, had Forest tune all the skis we had on the trailer at no cost to the Achievers. So let’s support Phil’s. If you need any new equipment, ski or snowboard tuning, rentals or want to look into their great new equipment leasing option, please go to Phil’s, tell them you’re with the Achiever’s and thank them for supporting us.
 
We worked hard, pulling virtually everything out of the trailer, repairing and marking some equipment, discussed options to make and keep the trailer more organized and have easier access to what it inside. We ask all of you to put everything back where you found it after using tools and/or equipment during our Mammoth trips. It will be greatly appreciated by the person(s) that need it next.
 
Special thanks to Steve for towing the trailer back and forth, to our Vice President, Patrick, for starting and nurturing the good relationship we have with Phil’s and also to Bernie, Gary, Ron, and Wayne for showing up and for all your hard work. It is inspiring to me to see so many give so much time to our group. It’s this kind of dedication and comradery that makes me sure The Achiever’s will be around for many more years.
