Mammoth to Host Olympic Qualifying Event January 8-10

December 21st, 2009

Shaun White celebrates winning the Olympic halfpipe gold medal in 2006 at the Turin Games in Italy.

Mammoth Mountain will host part of the qualifying competitions on the weekend of January 8-10, 2009 as part of the Grand Prix Series of snowboarding. The Grand Prix Series determines who the US will be sending to the Winter Olympics this February in Vancouver British Columbia. The series has already started at Copper Mountain, Colorado on Dec 11-12 with american men & women taking 5 of the 6 podium spots. The final decisions will be made in Park City on the weekend of January 22-23.

I bring this up because this event coincides with our next student trip to Mammoth, this will be a great opportunity to see some of the best in the world competing right in front of the Main Lodge.

DSES Opens Thrift Store in Mammoth

December 21st, 2009

Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra has opened a thrift store at the Mammoth Mall in the corner behind the Chart House on Old Mammoth Road. Bernhard had the opportunity to check out the store on the last trip. His son Lucas had an ‘equipment malfunction’… one of his boots broke. After checking the rental rates Bernhard made a quick trip down to the store & was able to pickup a pair of used boots at a very reasonable price, cheaper than renting for the weekend.

Bernhard also mentioned that there is quite a variety of items available from clothes to equipment. This is a great resource for families or someone just starting out, follow the link below to find out more about it.

This island-themed night of dinner and live music with a raffle and silent auction gives you the chance to party all night long, while supporting Disabled Sports’ nonprofit adaptive programs.

Highlights of this year’s Island Extravaganza include live reggae music by Santa Barbara’s One Two Tree, DJ Shawn Roj and a grand raffle prize of a trip for two to Hawaii!

All proceeds from Island Extravaganza go straight into supporting the rehabilitation of wounded service men and women through the Wounded Warriors program and to providing scholarships for adaptive students. For every $75 we raise, we can give an adaptive ski or snowboard lesson to a student. We need everyone’s help so that we can continue to provide these programs for those who need them most!

November 28th, 2009

Just in time for our first student trip of the season! Mammoth just sent out a dump alert, they have received over a foot of fresh snow already and it is expected to keep snowing throughout the day. According to the website they are running the lower lifts including Discovery, this is a good sign for us.

Keep Thinking Snow!

Mammoth Opens for 2009-10 Season!

October 19th, 2009

Mammoth Opened last Friday October 16, 2009 for their 2nd earliest opening ever! For those eager enough to get those first tracks in with Wooly, they were also greeted with a warm spell. It was warm enough that Mammoth decided to close today. I received an email this morning, they are going to wait for a little more snow and then open up again…so Think Snow!

Here is a shot I pulled off the Mammoth Mountain Website
