Hello Achievers,

Next Important Date: Nov 23rd (Tuesday) – General Meeting

The first student trip is less than a month away, please mark your calendar to attend the general meeting on Nov 23rd.  Bring your membership forms/fees, evaluation forms, and trip forms.  If you’re planning on staying at Viewpoint condo, they are now requiring that we provide at least 2 weeks notice; as such, we have to get your reservation and payment by Nov 23rd.  We’re working on updating the trip forms, that will be forthcoming shortly.

Please remember membership forms are due now, you can send the forms and payment to Karen Lunzman, or scan your forms and send via email. (or drop them off at the General Meeting)

If you are a new “instructor”, please remember you’ll need to go through a background check; the cost is paid by the group, and it’s easy as clicking on a link, and putting in the below registration number. This needs to be done every two years.  Please do this as early as possible as the process can take 30 days. http://www.ncsisafe.com/ Enter self registration number: 29771900

Picnic Pictures

October 4th, 2010

I did not have a chance to make it to the picnic this year, but I understand it was well attended by a lot of new members as well as some returning. Gary, Pat & a few others did a great job putting everything together at Pat’s place this year. Karen sent over some picture, check them out below.

DSUSA-OC 2010 Kickoff Picnic

August 24th, 2010

clip_image001

Hello Achievers,

Our annual summer picnic is just around the corner! Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 18th @ 12pm.    We’re in for a special treat this year as Pat Moynihan has offered to host this year’s picnic as well as graciously supply delicious Australian tri-tip and barbeque chicken.  Furthermore, the meat will be prepared by one of Orange County’s top chefs.  So bring a hearty appetite as there will be plenty of meat to go around.  We would appreciate if you could bring a side dish, salad, dessert or drinks to share.  There is a community pool so be sure to bring your swim suits too!

Location: 3754 Hamilton Street, Irvine CA 92614

Directions: Take 405 freeway, exit Culver Blvd; go North.  Make a quick left turn at San Leandro, left at Paseo Westpark, and the park will be at the end of the street.  You can park in the street or parking lot.

If you don’t know already, Editor Tom Stanton has stepped down as Publicity Chair.  He has been in this position for a long time, and has done such a GREAT job !!  It will be tough to fill his shoes; but fear not, he said he’ll still be around to help with the new http://theachievers.org/ website.

Our first initiative this year is to increase communications, so we’ve decided to try using Facebook to assist with this.  We’ve setup a “members only” group site through Facebook; hopefully most of you are members, and if you’re not, it’s FREE to sign-up.    The group site will allow us to share pictures, setup automatic invites to important events, and bring up discussion on various topics.  I hope everyone takes the time to join, click here to request to be added http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=115237338527024&ref=ts .  I’ve already uploaded some great pictures from the 2010 Banquet.

See you there !!

2010 Ski-a-thon

March 16th, 2010

image

What another great weekend we had at Mammoth for the Ski-a-Thon. We had a lot of students, families & instructors come up on the trip.

Since we have had more interest from students wanting to snowboard, Karey put on a great snowboard clinic on Friday morning for our snowboarding instructors. We put on a full day of lessons on Saturday before a well deserved Pot-Luck dinner. Come Sunday morning Brent had setup a challenging slalom course straight down the toughest part of Sesame Street.

I don’t know who was the fastest or who made the most runs, one thing is for sure everyone had a good time. Enjoy the pictures Bernhard & Karen sent in.

Gordon’s ‘View’

February 12th, 2010

The February trip promised a weekend of fresh powder for some great riding. This fact coupled with my new mid fats should have made me very exsighted. Some logistical issues that cropped  up at the last minute, made me unreasonably upset and disturbed my mindset. I had arranged with Kat and Christine for transportation. Picture1

The famous Ton sisters certainly add some new blood to our group. By the time we left LA they had me laughing so hard, the stresses of my crazy life slipped past us like the many miles on the way to Mammoth Village.

For almost twelve years, I have participated on every monthly trip like a zealous faithful devotee. I almost began to take things for granted. I would show up on Saturday morning and get myself ready and simply go skiing. Things have run so smoothly that I forgot just how much organizing, planning and hard work go on behind the scenes to bring this all about.

The newsletters inform and remind me of the upcoming events. The condo assignments, equipment and lessons are coordinated. A special thanks to the board members "retreads" for accomplishing all this for each one of us. My sincere gratitude to each person who has gone out of their way just to say hello to me, or give a word of encouragement. Lastly, the pinnacle of thanks goes to those who have taken up the challenge of guiding me. We have overcome my general lack of conditioning, altitude issues, temperamental headsets and some clueless riders to carve out some great fun. Looking back at the past decade, the Achievers have been an integral part of my life. I have met some truly kind and some fun loving people. I hope to see, I mean hear you guys on our upcoming ski trips. If I can do this, I can do anything!

Humbly,

Gordon

‘Transpack Bags’ anyone……

January 27th, 2010

From Karey;

Anyone need a boot or ski bag? I am putting together an order for Transpack bags, which we get at ‘Pro Pricing’. You can look at their website (http://www.transpack.net/) for style and color selections and let me know which one you are interested in purchasing (a first and second choice would be good). I believe that the XTPro is $43, the TRV Pro is $46, the XTI is $31; prints are extra and there would be shipping and handling. I will then check with the company to see if they have them in stock. Contact Karey Kusuhara via email at: kareykus@mac.com

December Trip Highlights

December 19th, 2009

Gary sent over some pictures and wrote up some highlights from the trip last weekend. Seems they got a little snow.

Had an interesting time with the trailer on Saturday. At the end of the day it was buried under about two feet of snow. That wasn’t to bad until a loader came by and left a huge berm of snow (probably about 6 feet) right in front of the trailer. We had to dig about four tons of snow before we could get a possible angle to hitch the trailer. Probably took about 45 minutes to do what we usually do in 10.

The last picture is from Viewpoint Sunday morning. The snow was pretty heavy and wet, especially in town. It froze overnight and we couldn’t open the doors on the Suburban. The whole truck was coated with about a half inch of ice. It was still snowing pretty hard, with pretty heavy winds Sunday morning. After consulting with Brent and Secretary Bernhard we  decided it would be best to keep everybody in and call it a day.

All in all it was a great trip. Al continues to tackle more difficult terrain. Reo and Ia both seemed to enjoy the outing.
